Frequently asked questions

Why does GlowCamp need location access in the background?

Automatic recording is the core feature of the app: as soon as you start a trip, GlowCamp records your route, even when the phone is locked or you are in another app. Without “Always” you would have to keep the app open during the whole drive. Recording only runs while you have started a trip yourself.

Where do my location and trip data end up?

Only on your device. GlowCamp stores all trips, legs, photos and diary entries locally in a database on your smartphone. There is no user account and no sign-up, and your location data does not go to our servers. For maps, place search, routes and campsite data, the app queries map services and our map server. Only what the request needs is sent (such as a map section or a search text), none of your saved trips. Details are in the privacy policy (German).

Does permanent tracking use a lot of battery?

GlowCamp adapts the recording rate automatically: it measures more often while driving and much less when parked. That keeps the extra battery use as low as possible, even on tours of several hours.

Is GlowCamp in the App Store or Play Store yet?

For iPhone, yes: GlowCamp is free on the App Store. For Android, a free beta is still running via Google Play. Here is how to join: glowcamp.de/en/beta.

Can I use it for hiking?

GlowCamp is not made for that. The recording is tuned for trips by car or vehicle. When you walk, it is too coarse. We have not explicitly tested it on a bike.

What is the best way to report a bug?

The fastest way is the feedback form (German) (no account needed): briefly say what you did, what you expected and what happened instead. Or send an email, ideally with a screenshot. In the app, go to Profile → Help & feedback. If you test a pre-release version via TestFlight, you can also send feedback directly in the TestFlight app.
